I recently read the story in your paper saying that the Sugar Mill night club is to remain open while a potential buyer is sought.
I for one completely agree with this decision, as Hull needs all the student clubs and nightclubs that it can get. For nights out during the week, clubs such as Propaganda and Fuel seem to be the most popular, while at weekend’s places like Pozition and Revolution gain the most customers at peak times.
From what I heard about the Sugar Mill, it sounds like a great night out, and whenever I have walked past, the place always seems to be full of life. It is just a shame that the current state of the economy has forced the owners to consider closing the Princes Dock club, as it would surely deal a heavy blow to the overall atmosphere of the city. I have also seen this article online, where others have commented on it. One person even suggested that it be turned into flats.
I do not agree with this in the slightest, as it is right in the middle of the city, and so the noise would be atrocious, especially during the weekends. The residents of the flats would be subjected to loud music from all angles, as there are bars and clubs all the way down a street that is nearby. This would also lead to violence, as many students walk around that area during the weekend nights, and ones that have drank too much would surely come into contact with the more sedate needs of residents. These are the biggest reasons as to why the Sugar Mill should remain a nightclub Sure, there are many other places where students could enjoy themselves during the weekend, such as Barracuda’s or Lyrics, but the Sugar Mill strikes a vibe in people’s hearts, something that is rarely seen in this great city.
If it were to close, a hole would surely be left in the core of Hull’s nightlife, and it will be a hefty challenge to replace the gap. This story will have surely affected business at the Sugar Mill, but I believe that with the right advertising, promotions and discounts, they can once again become the dominant source of entertainment for students in the early hours.
