With past guests including Sebo K, Simon Baker, Barem and Hector, the Different Language music policy spans house to techno.
The parties are randomly scattered through the year and are hosted in unique and original warehouse and outdoor spaces. The venue for tonight’s Hallowe’en showcase was Fruit, a 350 capacity warehouse space that’s powered by a hefty Funktion One sound system.
The Different Language party, now well into its fourth year, is guided by residents Martin Hodgson and Rob Fletcher. Sona Sound sit alongside them as residents and they have continued to innovate the underground scene in Hull – not an easy task by any means.
Already this year, though, they’ve played host to Cocoon’s Nick Curly, Item & Thing’s new recruit Madato – at the time of his well-received release on Magda and Marc Houle’s label and Kevin McHugh aka Ambivalent of Minus.
Hallowe’en has become a popular night in Hull and fancy dress was optional but certainly in the majority and added to the debauched atmosphere of the event.
Special guest was Visionquest’s Laura Jones, who has spent the majority of the summer being regularly unleashed on the world’s most esteemed parties by the likes of Seth Troxler, and Sasha. Her house bombs Love In Me and Live A Little, out on Leftroom and Visionquest respectively has shown Laura is one of the scenes most exciting producers. Also invited to the party was mono_cult’s Matt Long, who also has had a busy summer over in Ibiza, Croatia and throughout the UK.
Up first was Different Language, starting proceedings with a smooth blend of dark beats yet containing an element of groove to entice the early party-goers onto the warehouse dance floor area. As the crowds flowed in, the music picked up in pace as cuts like Lerio Corrado – Oklahoma and Anton Sever’s I Can Fly warmed the Funktion One sound system.
Next up, later than scheduled were Sona Sound who continued to warm up the now busy dance floor with their trademark driving-tech sound. Matt Long then took over to deliver tracks such as Todd Terje – Ragosh and Scuba – Adrenaline. By this point the doors closed due to the club hitting capacity. Only those on the guest list managed to squeeze in past the door staff.
Laura Jones was up next and delivered well over 2 hours of her distinct brand of stylish melodic house. The crowd never filtered and heads littered with fancy dress masks, face paint and wigs continued to throw arms and bodies in to the air. As the end drew near Laura dropped her own Love In Me track to receive a round of applause when the last beat dropped.
Undoubtedly, to everyone at Different Language, it was a very Happy Hallowe’en all round.
